Jaguar's original XJ is one of the most significant cars in the company's history. Jaguar introduced the XJ line of luxury saloons in 1968, replacing three prior sedans; the Mark II, the S-Type and the 420. The combination of luxury and sport set a new standard in the market. It offered a 4.2 litre straight six engine developing 240bhp and an optional (and now rare) 2.8 litre engine to fit European tax laws. With disc brakes all around, independent rear suspension, power-assisted steering, power windows, leather interior, optional air conditioning and competitively priced versus others in the class made the XJ6 a market leader. The XJ6 remained in production until 1986 and the XJ12 continued to 1992. Over 300,000 were produced.
